Naturalistic Planting Style

Naturalistic planting design is by definition planting inspired by nature, using form, colour and texture, to create a planting scheme that captures the essence of natural plant communities. A great naturalistic garden makes you feel a sense of wonder, much as you would feel walking through an alpine meadow or an ancient woodland.

Naturalistic planting style is often used on a large scale in urban environments and large gardens where it is used to dramatic effect. At GardenWild we are often asked to create wildlife-friendly but low maintenance planting schemes in domestic gardens. The naturalistic style can work really well in a small space, using bold and dramatic plants to create uplifting and visual interesting spaces.

Some great examples of the naturalistic style can be found in the UK. Noteably, designer Piet Oudolfs’ gardens at the Hauser and Wirth gallery in Somerset, and Scampston Walled Gardens near Malton, North Yorkshire.

Other great examples include-

Dan Pearsons garden at Lowther Castle, Penrith

Nigel Dunnetts planting at the Barbican, London

Tom Stuart Smiths gardens at The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Its low-maintenance nature makes it ideal for this type of planting requiring only some editing in the initial stages and an annual cut back and clear. The use of a bulb layer and some emergent shrubs or trees can be used to prolong the seasons of interest for year round effect.

Plants we might use in an Arts and Crafts garden.
