Mediterranean Planting Style
Planting for drier conditions such as gritty, fast-draining beds can be undertaken in the Mediterranean planting style. This is characterised by dry loving plants native to or similar to plants found growing on the rocky slopes of the Mediterranean. Hot and exposed conditions make for a vast array of drought tolerant plants that have evolved to survive this harsh environment.
Species selection for a mediterranean border should include a variety of dry-loving plants. In terms of trees and shrubs this may include Cypresses and olive trees to structure the border with vertical punctiations. Low-growing perennials such as Euphorbias and Phlomis for colour and floral displays bring interest and biodiversity through provision of pollen and nectar for insects. Mediterranean herbs like rosemary, thyme and lavenders benefit not only the visual characteristics of the planting, but add a sensory dimension to the bed with their enjoyable scents. Furthermore what could be more rewarding than enjoying an al fresco evening meal garnished with herbs fresh from the garden!
Herbaceous perennials and alpine plants commonly make up a mediterranean style border with famillar species such as lavenders and rosemary providing a productive and interactive element to the planting. Although the previously described conditions may seem a far cry from the cold and wet weather we all know and love, meditarranean planting can be feasible and succesful right here in the north of England, given the right conditions. Ideally, a south-facing border free from canopy cover with fast, free draining soils (with high proportions of gravel/ grits) would be a great situation for a mediterranean style planting area or herb garden.
